"Tubonge na Gavana" which loosely translates to "Let's talk with the Government and..." is a public participation extension hosted in public vans known as Matatus that are very popular with the youth. Matatus are the most popular mode of public transport in Kenya, used by millions of people daily. Their distinctive appearance and features, such as sound and screens make them an ideal platform for organizing public participation forums.
The Mission
Using Matatus as a platform for public participation provides an easy and inclusive way for people to express their opinions on different matters. In Nairobi County, we utilized these public transport vehicles to reach individuals from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that voices from all economic, ethnic, and geographic groups were represented and acknowledged.
Conducting public participation in Matatus is a convenient and accessible way for citizens to share their views and feedback on various issues. In Nairobi County, we used these matatus to engage citizens from all walks of life, regardless of their socio-economic status, ethnicity, or geographical location and ensured that a wide range of perspectives and voices were heard.
